Doctor Who Codex

The Flux Event

A wave of destruction that eats the universe, leaving only time to answer.

The Flux was an unprecedented cosmic anomaly threatening to unravel existence itself. Manifesting as a voracious wave of violet energy, it consumed galaxies and civilizations in mere moments, fracturing the timeline under the strain. Serving as the central antagonist arc for Series 13, this crisis forced the Doctor to confront ancient enemies and the dark secrets of her own forgotten past.

Companions Involved
Yaz, Dan Lewis, and Ryan Sinclair
Key Location of Origin
Time Fractures manipulated by the Division and exploited by the Ravagers (Swarm and Azure)

Lore & Background

As the wave approached, standard temporal defenses proved useless against an entity existing outside linear time. The crisis compelled the Doctor to face the Division's legacy and the consequences of abandoning them centuries ago. To stop the Flux, Earth was protected by Lupari shields while Swarm met his end when Yaz harnessed the power of a Weeping Angel to destroy him in the finale. Utilizing Time Lord technology at the Temple of Atropos, the Doctor stabilized fractured history but departed in the TARDIS alone, leaving her companions behind on Earth.

In Their Own Story

The sky above Earth did not darken; it simply ceased to be. Where stars once burned, there was only a hungry, violet void swallowing the light. The Doctor stood on the precipice of a crumbling timeline, watching as the moon fractured into dust before her eyes. 'It's coming,' she whispered, the wind howling with the screams of a billion erased worlds. Beside her, Dan gripped the edge of reality itself, his voice trembling not from fear, but from the sheer impossibility of what they were witnessing. The TARDIS hummed a frantic warning, its doors rattling as if trying to escape the encroaching nothingness that was eating the concept of tomorrow.

Reader's Guide

The arc begins with disappearances rippling through history, leading the Doctor and companions to a mysterious energy signature. They discover the Division, a covert Time Lord agency from the Doctor's past, manipulated events to contain the Flux.

Investigation reveals the Flux was triggered by the Division's failed attempt to seal a rift, inadvertently allowing Swarm and Azure—Ravagers from outside the universe—to invade reality. As the wave accelerates, swallowing galaxies, the Doctor navigates a fractured timeline where her past actions hold catastrophic weight.

In the climax, the Doctor travels back to the Temple of Atropos to confront the Division's original mistake. Rather than resetting history, she channels the Flux energy into the rift to heal the fracture in time. This resolves the threat and preserves their journey, though the immediate aftermath briefly separates her friends before they can be reunited.
